The best way to get to Drake Bay, Costa Rica is by boat. This guide will help you understand how to arrive to the Osa Peninsula and experience the natural wonders of the Corcovado National Park and the Cano Island Biological Reserve.
Taking the boat from Sierpe to Drake Bay is a very fun and memorable experience. It takes you through the largest living mangrove ecosystem in Central America, through the waves of the river mouth, and into the ocean across the most uninhabited shoreline of the country. The boat ride is exciting and foreign from the second most people get into the boat, which is why we wrote this article to help you be prepared for what to expect.
The public boat docks are located next to the restaurant Oleaje Serreno. Every taxi driver in Palmar knows where they are, and if you have a rental car, there are plenty of safe places to park it for a small fee.
The boat captains have a strict schedule every day. A fleet of boats depart from Sierpe to Drake Bay twice a day and they depart Drake Bay to Sierpe twice a day (every day). Expect to pay a bit more for the afternoon boats.

When you arrive at the docks, usually someone will ask you which hotel you are going to. They need to know your hotel to drop you off on the right beach. The boat ride to Drake Bay takes about 1 hour. If you are going to the hotels closer to Corcvoado: Punta Marenco, San Josecito Beach, or Jungla del Jaguar it takes about 1.5 hours.
The boat captains or their assistants may instruct you to wait until they are ready to load the boats. When it is time to load the boats, they will show you which boat to get on. First, they will put everyone’s bags in the bow of the boat. You can get into the boat when you are instructed to do so. The captains do not speak English, so they only know the commands they need every day. This may make them seem cold, but they are most certainly not. All of the public boat captains are fun loving and light-hearted, although it is hard for them to express their jokes in English. They have all been navigating these waters their entire lives, so rest assured that you are in safe hands. They all help each other out so if there is ever a problem with a boat there is always another boat to help. The most important thing to remember is to follow their directions because they do this every day, and they know what they are doing.
